On a wretched afternoon at the Amex, Brighton’s 0-1 defeat by Crystal Palace produced grim player ratings, with Bart Verbruggen the only standout. According to WeAreBrighton.com, he led on 5.29, with Olivier Boscagli next on exactly five.
Verbruggen organised well at set pieces and made an excellent save after Brighton fell behind. Ferdi Kadioglu’s dash across the pitch left his flank open, letting Ismalia Sarr run clear for the key break.
Lewis Dunk headed a Pascal Gross delivery wide when he should have hit the target, then a poor initial clearing header from Adam Wharton’s dinked pass handed Palace the platform to score. Gross’s set pieces were decent, but he slowed possession.
Kaoru Mitoma looked short of sharpness after a 10-week lay-off, mustering one testing ball. Charalampos Kostoulas impressed in flashes, then failed to beat Dean Henderson one-on-one minutes after Palace went ahead.
Georginio Rutter finished bottom on 2.47 and later apologised to the North Stand and on social media. Harry Howell became Brighton’s youngest top-flight starter, mixing bright touches with occasional struggles.
Maxim De Cuyper’s withdrawal left Brighton without a natural left back until Jack Hinshelwood arrived with 10 minutes left. Danny Welbeck came on late without impact. Yankuba Minteh and Diego Gomez laboured, Gomez quickly booked for cheap fouls.
Home frustrations spilled over at full-time, with boos and chants that Fabian Hurzeler would be sacked in the morning. The ratings were compiled from supporters’ marks out of 10 on social media.
