Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes led the way as several players took to social media to pay tribute to Ruben Amorim, following his sacking.
On Monday morning, David Ornstein of The Athletic dropped the bombshell news that Amorim had been sacked by United after 14 months in charge.
This development came off the back of Amorim’s fiery public outburst after United played out a 1-1 draw with Leeds United at Elland Road on Sunday. In his post-match presser, Amorim strongly hinted at cracks in his relationship with the football leadership group.
He further sparked controversy by claiming his role was that of a manager, not a head coach, and repeatedly questioned his future at United.
It appears that these remarks did not go down well with decision-makers at Old Trafford. Moments after Ornstein’s report, the club released an official statement confirming Amorim’s exit.
Under-18s boss Darren Fletcher will take charge of the team ahead of Wednesday’s meeting at Burnley. United are on the hunt for an interim gaffer, with a view to making a permanent change in the summer.
A report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that Michael Carrick is a leading candidate to become interim manager for the rest of the campaign. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is another option.
As the dust settles on Amorim’s tenure, several players have come out to express their gratitude to the 40-year-old.
Fernandes led the way, writing on Instagram, “Thank you, sir! I wish you and your technical staff all the best.”
Defender Harry Maguire said, “Thank you for everything, boss. I wish you all the best in the future.”
Amorim’s countryman, Diogo Dalot, noted, “Thank you for everything, mister! And good luck for the future.”
Matthijs de Ligt added, “Thank you for everything boss. Good luck for the future.”
Mason Mount posted, “Thank you, gaffer. All the best to you and your staff for the future.”
Amad, currently away with Ivory Coast for AFCON duty wrote, “Good luck my coach. Thank you for everything, I wish you all the best.”
Youngsters Leny Yoro and Chido Obi also had kind words for Amorim.
Yoro posted, “Thank you, coach, for everything. All the best for what’s next.” Obi remarked, “Thank you for everything gaffer especially for allowing me to make my debut for such a big club. Wish you all the best.”

Despite the difficult ending, Amorim clearly commanded the squad’s respect.
