Rumours have continued to swirl regarding the future of Manchester United’s skipper Bruno Fernandes.

Last season, the Red Devils had received an offer of around £100 million for the Portuguese international, which they were inclined to accept.

A conversation with former head coach Ruben Amorim and his own family changed his mind, and he ended up staying at Old Trafford.

INEOS’ call to sell him was not appreciated, which he expressed in an interview as well. The co-owners also responded with thoughts of their own, and tensions were rising between both parties.

Bruno Fernandes’ future up in the air

With the team’s fortunes sagging on the pitch under Amorim, and the entry of Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain in the race, fans were fearing the worst.

According to Givemesport, the club captain is open to remaining in Manchester should the club qualify for the Champions League.

And as things stand, the 20-time English league champions look on course to finish in the top four. To improve matters, the Bavarian giants are in no position to match United’s valuation.

Michael Carrick’s arrival has stabilised the ship, with the three-time Champions League winners unbeaten in their last five Premier League games, and only six points behind third-placed Aston Villa.

His condition for staying

“Manchester United expect to fend off big Saudi interest in Bruno Fernandes again this summer – but it’s believed the Old Trafford captain has different plans.

“Sources close to Fernandes say he’s certain to stay at the club if they clinch Champions League football next season.

“Fernandes is said to be as “upbeat and positive” as he’s been for some time at United having formed a close working relationship with interim coach Michael Carrick.”

At 31, it makes sense for Bruno Fernandes to prioritise his career, and both he and United deserve to play in Europe’s elite club competition next season.

But should INEOS let go of Carrick, who is helping guide United back into the competition, Bruno Fernandes and the rest of the squad will not be pleased. Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his team have quite the conundrum on their hands.
