Bruno Henrique scored the opener as Flamengo began their 2026 Libertadores with a 2-0 win over Cusco of Peru on Wednesday, extending his habit of deciding tournament openers.

The forward headed in Ayrton Lucas’s cross after a quick break at 3,350 metres in Cusco. Arrascaeta added the second to seal the points.

According to Coluna Do Fla, Bruno Henrique has been directly involved in goals in the club’s last three Libertadores openers in seasons that ended in the title.

In 2019 in Oruro against San José, he set up Gabigol for a 1-0 away win that launched the successful campaign.

In 2022 in Lima, Flamengo beat Sporting Cristal 2-0 and he scored after a cross from Matheuzinho.

In 2025 in San Cristóbal against Deportivo Táchira, his deft header found Juninho, who finished the only goal.

Flamengo now chase a fifth Libertadores crown, and for the superstitious, his streak in opening games is an encouraging sign. The next Group A match is against Independiente Medellín at the Maracanã on 16 April at 21:30 Brasília time.
