Matchday 13 in the Bundesliga saw a whopping 31 goals, a 5-0, a 6-0, and a Nordderby classic. There’s plenty to talk about, so without further ado, here is everything you need to know from matchday 13 in the Bundesliga.
Harry Kane came off the bench and scored three goals in 22 minutes as Bayern beat VfB Stuttgart 5-0. With the score only at 1-0 at halftime, Stuttgart were playing well and missed a couple of big chances as they looked to get back on level terms.
However, once Kane entered the pitch, it was almost as if Stuttgart completely fell apart. Five minutes into his game, Kane picked up the ball, ran at the defence, and wasn’t closed down at all. Kane took advantage by shooting from just outside the box and placing the ball into the corner of the net. Just moments later, it was three as Stuttgart goalkeeper (and Bayern loanee) Alexander Nübel dropped the ball into his net.
Four minutes later, Kane converted a penalty as Lorenz Assignon clearly handled the ball on the line. Two minutes from time, Kane got his hat-trick after finishing off a lovely Bayern move. Vincent Kompany’s side stay eight points clear, whilst Kane moves onto 17 Bundesliga goals for the season and registers his 10th hat-trick in Bayern colours.
RB Leipzig completely dominated Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday evening as they put six past a team that has already had its defensive issues this season.
Many have already discussed Frankfurt’s defensive issues this season. Early in the campaign, they conceded a minimum of four games over the space of three matches. These issues seemingly were improved slightly; however, this game has reopened a can of worms that head coach Dino Toppmöller would rather forget.
In fact, after the 6-0 thumping on the weekend, only FC Heidenheim have conceded more in the league than Frankfurt this season. Perhaps their saving grace is the 28 goals they’ve also scored – the joint-second highest in the league.
For Leipzig, it was a splendid performance. Conrad Harder opened the floodgates with his first goal for the Saxons after just five minutes. A communication breakdown between defender and goalkeeper allowed Harder to sneak in and head the ball into an empty net from the edge of the box.
19-year-old winger, Yan Diomande, will take all the plaudits once again as he registered his first career hat-trick. Christoph Baumgartner and David Raum also netted to cap off a fantastic evening for Leipzig.
Managerless FC Augsburg pulled off the shock of the round as they beat Bayer Leverkusen 2-0. Former FCA head coach Manuel Baum returned to the bench as he helped the Bavarian Swabian Fuggerstädter to a famous victory.
Baum – taking over temporarily for the sacked Sandro Wagner – made some solid tactical calls, moving the versatile Robin Fellhauer back to a midfield deployment and giving intriguing summer acquisition Anton Kade his first deployment as a center-forward. Newly tapped squad captain Keven Schlotterbeck assisted on Dimitrios Giannoulis’ 6th-minute 1-0. Some 20 minutes later, Giannoulis set up Kade’s 2-0.
Despite the win, the game saw protests from home fans, who are unsatisfied with the personnel changes and the rebranding of the club. A particular banner unveiled later in the match endorsed Manuel Baum’s appointment as the club’s new permanent head coach whilst calling for the resignations of managing director Michael Ströll and club president Markus Krapf.
Despite the win, Manuel Baum is certain that his appointment will only last three games as the club has something else planned in terms of securing a new head coach.
Elsewhere in the Bundesliga, Hamburger SV beat Werder Bremen 3-2 in a Nordderby classic. Veteran Yussuf Poulsen scored an 84th-minute winner as HSV fans witnessed another memorable evening of football two weeks in a row. “That was a very special event that fit with the tone of the week,” Poulsen said of the arrival. “The tension had been building over the last few days.“
St. Pauli finally stopped their losing streak thanks to a 95th-minute equaliser away at FC Köln. Former Peterborough forward Ricky-Jade Jones made his Bundesliga debut and scored the goal that ensured that Pauli left the Domstadt with a point. “We finally managed to stop the losing streak,” Jones himself added. “It gives us a good feeling for the upcoming games, in which we want more results. I’m overjoyed that I was able to help the team with my goal.”
FC Heidenheim earned a fantastic 2-1 against SC Freiburg. The win puts FCH three points in front of the automatic relegation zone.
Mainz remain bottom with just one win following a 0-1 loss to Borussia Monchengladbach on Friday evening. Since then, the club has announced that former Union Berlin manager, Urs Fischer, will be the new head coach.
Elsewhere, there were impressive wins for Borussia Dortmund (2-0 vs TSG Hoffenheim) and VfL Wolfsburg (3-1 vs Union Berlin).
