What a weekend in the Bundesliga! Matchday 19 witnessed Bayern Munich lose for the first time, a Hamburg derby, more defensive woes for Frankfurt, a huge win at the bottom of the table, and so much more. Here is everything you need to know from matchday 19 in the Bundesliga

Bayern Munich Beaten

It’s finally happened, Bayern Munich have lost for the first time in the Bundesliga this season. The 1-2 defeat came in the Bavarian Derby against FC Augsburg of all teams. They say that history often repeats itself, and it seems as though it has when it comes to this fixture. Back in the 2023/14 season, FC Augsburg ended Bayern’s long-standing unbeaten run, just as they did again last weekend, a little over ten years later.

Speaking after their 2-1 defeat against neighbouring Augsburg, who staged a stunning second-half comeback, Vincent Kompany wasn’t too worried about the result, but with games coming thick and fast, he expects a reaction against PSV before Bundesliga games against Hamburg and Hoffenheim.

“We’ve had many, many wins here and often had reason to celebrate, but now we’ve lost, and we need to accept that,” said Kompany.

“The hunger is always there; that’s not the problem. Sometimes the performance on the day just isn’t there.”

“People often say that the Bundesliga is easy, but we know from our own experience that it isn’t. We shouldn’t question everything now; we just need to accept that today wasn’t our day.”

Frankfurt Concede Again

Eintracht Frankfurt are in a downwards spiral right now. No Bundesliga win in their last five, out of the Champions League, and currently have the worst defensive record in the league, bar last place FC Heidenheim.

Saturday was another damming report on just have frail things are at the back for The Eagles. Having taken the lead against TSG Hoffenheim, Frankfurt had started brightly and deserved to go into the break 1-0 up.

However, all that changed in the space of 13 minutes.

Hoffenheim turned up the pressure in the second half and went on to record three goals in that time, effectively killing the game with 25 minutes to spare.

As soon as Frankfurt conceded the first goal, the atmosphere in the stadium changed and so did the physically attitude of the players, clearly still scarred from their recent defeat in Azerbaijan a few days prior.

The loss now leaves Frankfurt in 8th place, still managerless, and quickly losing ground on the European places.

For Hoffenheim, they continue their remarkable rise and sit in 3rd position, in front of a close chasing pack.

Mainz Might Be Okay

Mainz 05 came from behind to beat VfL Wolfsburg 3-1 in what could prove to be a season-defining moment. The three points lifts them off the bottom, into 16th, and just three points from safety.

Urs Fischer is clearly getting a tune out of his players a deserves a lot of credit in turning the fortunes of a side that has been bottom for most of the season and in many people’s eyes, destined for the 2. Bundesliga next season.

Mainz now have Werder Bremen in their sights, who have seemingly sleepwalked into a relegation battle, something that this review pointed out a few weeks prior.

Up next for Mainz is a tricky fixture away to RB Leipzig, whilst Bremen hosts the equally intimidating Hoffenheim

Around The Grounds

Elsewhere in the Bundesliga, the Hamburg derby between St. Pauli and HSV ended 0-0. Whilst the game itself was of the greatest quality, it was a fantastic atmosphere, and possibly means both sets of fans went away somewhat happy. Neither team lost, and we still believe they have a good chance to get out of danger at the bottom.

Borussia Dortmund comfortably ran out 0-3 winners against Union Berlin and closed the gap on Bayern to eight points. Following the game, Nico Schlotterbeck (who was on the scoresheet), said that he has set a deadline to make a decision on his BVB future.

VfB Stuttgart continue their impressive run and move up to 4th after a 0-3 win against Borussia Mönchengladbach on Sunday.

Elsewhere, there were wins for Bayer Leverkusen (1-0 vs Werder Bremen), RB Leipzig (0-3 vs FC Heidenheim), and SC Freiburg (2-1 vs FC Köln).
