Burkina Faso: Date for squad announcement ahead of Egypt clash revealed
As part of September's FIFA international window, Burkina Faso's head coach is set to reveal his squad this week.
Brahima Traoré will unveil the roster of players who will represent Burkina Faso in rounds seven and eight of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers during a press conference on Thursday, August 28.
Questions and anticipated changes
The squad announcement is shrouded in uncertainty, most notably regarding the presence of captain Bertrand Traoré, who is currently sidelined with an injury and has missed Ajax Amsterdam's last two matches. His participation remains in doubt.
Another key issue concerns Issa Kaboré, who is under contract with Manchester City. After spending last season on loan at Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga, the right-back has returned to the Citizens, who are considering a permanent transfer. However, Kaboré has struggled for game time.
Beyond the usual suspects, strong rumors suggest the emergence of fresh faces, notably Georgie Minoungou, a winger for the Seattle Sounders in the United States, who is also eligible for Ivory Coast but has recently obtained his Burkinabé papers.
Another name making waves in Burkina Faso's football scene is Clovis Jean Yves Bazimo, the young goalkeeper playing for Africa Sport in Ivory Coast's second division. Just a week ago, Abidjan's club announced on their official channels that their keeper had received his first call-up to the senior Stallions squad.
Crucial showdown against Egypt
All eyes are on this squad list, as the Stallions face two decisive fixtures. To close the gap on Egypt in Group A of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, the team will travel on September 5 to Guinea-Bissau to face Djibouti.
The second, and most anticipated, clash comes against the group leaders, the Pharaohs. This encounter is scheduled for September 9 at the newly renovated August 4 Stadium in Ouagadougou, marking its first official match since the overhaul. It's a pivotal test for Brahima Traoré and his men—victory would bring them within just two points of the Egyptian frontrunners.
