Burnley 0-2 Brighton: Wieffer brace tops ratings as Gross shines

Mats Wieffer struck at the end of each half as Brighton won 2-0 at Burnley, a type of post-international break trip they often find awkward against relegation-threatened opponents. It was the first double of his career.

According to WeAreBrighton.com, Wieffer topped the player ratings ahead of Pascal Gross, who laid on the opener, and Fabian Hurzeler said he deserves a Netherlands recall after missing the Dutch squad since moving from central midfield to right back.

Bart Verbruggen produced a superb first-half save with his legs from point blank range after a low James Ward-Prowse corner caught Albion napping. Gross then swept a low ball back across the area for Wieffer to finish clinically before the break.

After half-time, Verbruggen made another smart stop with his feet and handled difficult conditions confidently. Kaoru Mitoma later dispossessed Ward-Prowse and teed up Wieffer for his second, and he was probably a little fortunate to avoid a foul call after a push.

Jan Paul van Hecke led the back line with a commanding display and a take-one-for-the-team booking, while Olivier Boscagli was dependable in Lewis Dunk’s absence. Ferdi Kadioglu’s diligent work on the opposite flank let Minteh attack with freedom.

Yasin Ayari impressed alongside Gross with James Milner injured, though Diego Gomez toiled on the ball. Jack Hinshelwood missed two presentable chances, drawing one fine save from Martin Dubravka, and Danny Welbeck squandered his best opening. Carlos Baleba steadied midfield from the bench, and Georginio Rutter had limited impact but joined the aeroplane celebration for the second.
