Could Gerrard be heading to Turf Moor? Ex-Crystal Palace chairman Jordan doesn't necessarily believe the Liverpool legend would deserve it...

Burnley could be heading into the Championship with a new manager in position at Turf Moor, with Scott Parker's future increasingly uncertain.

Just like the last time they were in the Premier League, the Clarets' stay lasted just one solitary season, with relegation back to the second tier confirmed after a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Man City last week.

The aforementioned Parker led Burnley to the top flight in his first campaign in charge in Lancashire, having succeeded Bayern Munich-bound Vincent Kompany in 2024, but after revealing he needs to talk to chairman Alan Pace over his future last week, news has been emerging that puts the ex-England midfielder's job in doubt.

Alan Nixon revealed over the weekend that Liverpool legend and former Rangers boss Steven Gerrard is on Pace and co's radar should the decision be made to get rid of Parker, with Alex Crook of talkSPORT now claiming that whilst no decision has been firmly made on his future, it very much remains hanging in the balance.

Simon Jordan gives honest Steven Gerrard, Burnley verdict

It appears that Gerrard would be the favourite to arrive at Turf Moor though if Parker is axed - he's been out of work since January 2025 when he brought his 18-month stint at Saudi Arabian outfit Al-Ettifaq to an end.

A Scottish Premiership title-winner with Rangers, Gerrard's stints at Aston Villa and out in the Middle East didn't go entirely to plan, and in the eyes of prominent pundit Simon Jordan, who was a chairman himself with Crystal Palace, the 45-year-old would be quite fortunate if he ended up with the Burnley job, whilst also firing a pretty clear shot at the club's ownership for chasing a big name.

"Steven Gerrard would be lucky to get this job," Jordan told talkSPORT on the morning of April 27.

"But people will go ‘it’s Steven Gerrard’. Yeah, but look at Steven Gerrard’s record. I know he did okay at Rangers, and that in its own right has to be qualified, and he didn’t do well at Aston Villa, and he didn’t do particularly well in Saudi.

"So, if he gets an opportunity at Burnley, which is a side you’d expect to bounce back to the Premier League, Steven Gerrard can consider himself lucky.

"It will certainly appeal to the egos of the autograph-hunting owners if their mindset is that way inclined. If they want to get out of the league and they believe Gerrard is fit for purpose. Never managed in the Championship, the last two jobs he's done have been not particularly impressive, so if that's a qualification for a job - obviously if he sits in an interview and illustrates that the hunger, the light is burning...

"You judge people like you do in boxing by their last fight, (in football) you judge them by their last job. He went to Saudi for a big bag of money, didn't do very much over there, came back because he didn't fancy it anymore, and couldn't do it at Aston Villa."

Steven Gerrard needs to rebuild managerial career - Burnley may give him that platform

Having been out of the dugout for nearly a year-and-a-half now, Gerrard certainly may be a bit rusty when it comes to being a manager, but Burnley are surely set up next season to go for immediate promotion.

And that is why it could be a good stepping stone back to the top flight for Gerrard, whose time at Aston Villa back in 2022 ended in disaster, when he was sacked with just a 32.5 per cent win record, and he was then paid handsomely at Al-Ettifaq to only win 23 of his 59 matches in charge.

Naturally, there will be reservations from the Clarets fanbase therefore if he was Alan Pace's top target, but Gerrard is a name that could draw some talented players to Turf Moor on top of the ones that the club will likely keep hold of ahead of next season - there's not a mass amount of the current squad that you could say are earmarked for top flight transfers this summer.

Simon Jordan's comments may prove divisive over whether Gerrard really would be 'lucky' or not to get the Burnley job, but if Parker does indeed leave in the coming weeks, the Scouser may have to try and prove the ex-Palace supremo wrong.
