CAF Champions League: Young Africans defeat AS FAR 1-0 in Group B opener
Young Africans successfully opened their CAF Champions League group stage campaign with 1-0 home win over AS FAR on Saturday at the Amaan Stadium in Zanzibar.
Young Africans striker Prince Dube made amends for squandering clear chance in the 8th minute by producing moment of individual quality shortly before the hour mark.
In the 58th minute the Zimbabwean forward dribbled past his marker and fired home superb finish to give Yanga the lead.
The goal capped dominant spell for the Tanzanian champions who pressed high and forced AS FAR into mistakes in midfield.
The Moroccan side thought they had drawn level in the 67 minute when Mohamed Hrimat powered in rebound from close range.
However the referee ruled the goal out for offside , a decision that sparked fierce protests from AS FAR players.
Television replays appeared to show Hrimat starting his run from onside position increasing the frustration on the visiting bench and igniting debate among pundits after the match.
AS FAR entered the competition with high expectations after strong domestic run but Saturday’s defeat places early pressure on their Group B campaign.
They will need to respond quickly in their next fixture to avoid falling behind in group that also includes Al Ahly & JS Kabylie.
