Five years at St James’ Park and Callum Wilson with his own personal message (Read HERE) for the Newcastle United fans.
Newcastle United have now put together (see below) a celebration of his time at NUFC, stand out moments.
A genuine player and great goalscorer, thank you Callum Wilson for everything.
Newcastle United official release that highlights many of the Callum Wilson key moments during his five years at the club – 7 July 2025:
As Callum Wilson brings down the curtain on a five-year spell at Newcastle United, netting 49 times in 130 competitive outings for the Magpies, newcastleunited.com take a look at the striker’s goal-laden stint at St. James’ Park.
7th September 2020 – Hey, Callum Wilson!
A 28-year-old Wilson completed a move to Tyneside from AFC Bournemouth, signing a deal to keep the striker at the club until the summer of 2024.
The Coventry-born forward told newcastleunited.com: “From the minute I knew that Newcastle were interested, it was definitely something that appealed to me. It’s a massive club with great history.
“Along the years, they’ve had great strikers so if I can emulate half of what they’ve done, I’d like to attempt that. I believe in my ability as a player. As a striker I think it’s important to set yourself goals long term and short term, and I’m hoping to achieve them.”
13th September 2020 – Debut delight
Newcastle kicked off the 2020/21 campaign with a 2-0 away win against West Ham United, with Wilson breaking the deadlock at the London Stadium before fellow debutant Jeff Hendrick doubled the Magpies’ lead to record a first opening day victory since 2012.
27th November 2020 – Cloud nine
Handed the number 13 jersey ahead of the 2020/21 campaign, Wilson made a positive start to his United career after recording nine goal contributions in as many Premier League matches, bagging braces against Burnley and Everton as well as netting late strikes against Tottenham Hotspur and Crystal Palace.
30th January 2021 – Howay 5 0
Starting 19 of Newcastle’s opening 21 league matches, the England international reached a half-century of goals in the Premier League following another brace against Everton in a 2-0 win, achieving the milestone with his first of two goals at Goodison Park.
“Having played in non-league, the Premier League seemed such a long way away and to ultimately get 50-plus goals in that league is an honour, really,” he said. Now the key is trying to build on that.
“Did I ever think I would get 50 goals in the Premier League? Probably not, although I knew I’d be a Premier League player. But I feel also that I would have got to 50 a lot quicker having not had setbacks throughout the journey.
“I’ve missed almost two seasons with injury – there’s goals there you could have had and I would have been a lot closer to 100. But at the end of the day you take what’s given to you; that was my path.”
19th May 2021 – Player of the Year
After netting 12 times in 28 appearances during a hugely impressive debut season at NE1, Wilson was named Newcastle United’s official Player of the Year for the 2020/21 campaign.
The striker missed two months of the campaign after hobbling out of United’s 3-2 win over Southampton in February but his return to action in April coincided with the Magpies’ march away from danger in the Premier League.
He struck a brace in what was to prove his final appearance of the season, a 4-2 triumph over Leicester City at the King Power Stadium and the Magpies had never lost a game in which Wilson found the net that term, becoming just the third striker after Salomón Rondón in 2018/19 and Alan Shearer in 2002/03 to take home the gong.
17th July 2021 – CW9
Ahead of the 2021/22 season, Wilson was awarded the famous number nine role following his goalscoring exploits the previous term, with Joelinton switching to number seven.
The number nine shirt has been worn by some of the club’s greatest ever goalscorers, with Jackie Milburn, Alan Shearer, Hughie Gallacher, Malcolm Macdonald and many others weaving it into Magpies folklore over the years.
“They’re both iconic shirts and we’re both going to contribute a lot to the team,” Wilson told NUFC TV. “You’re playing for the badge on the front ultimately but you’re wearing a special number on the back and it’s just about doing it justice, playing well and helping the team.”
17th October 2021 – The first goal of a new era
Following the club’s change of ownership on October 7, a new era began in thrilling fashion as Wilson opened the scoring in United’s Premier League visit of Tottenham Hotspur, heading home from Javier Manquillo’s cross inside two minutes at St. James’ Park.
The festival atmosphere, however, was dampened as first-half strikes from Harry Kane, Tanguy Ndombele and Heung-min Son left the Magpies in the division’s bottom three, with fears of relegation remaining a stark possibility. 4th December 2021 – Howe about that?
Following Eddie Howe’s appointment as Newcastle United’s head coach a month prior, Wilson helped his former manager record his first victory as Magpies boss after netting the only goal in a 1-0 win against Burnley at St. James’ Park.
After Clarets goalkeeper Nick Pope, who would join the Magpies the following summer, fumbled Joe Willock’s cross inside the box, Wilson was on hand to steer the ball into the roof of the net to record the club’s first Premier League victory of the 2021/22 campaign.
22nd May 2022 – Classic Wilson
Wilson missed the majority of the second-half of the 2021/22 campaign due to a calf injury before starting the final two fixtures of the season, captaining the Magpies to a memorable 2-0 home win against Arsenal before netting a brace against Burnley on the final day at Turf Moor, taking his goalscoring tally to five in his last four matches against the Lancashire-based outfit.
Howe’s side, remarkably, avoided relegation from the Premier League after picking up 38 points from their final 19 games in the English top-flight, recording 12 wins in the process whilst finishing two points adrift of a top-half finish.
29th October 2022 – World Cup calling
After scoring on the opening day of Newcastle’s 2-0 win against Nottingham Forest, netting in his opening match for a third consecutive campaign, United endured a six-game winless streak in the Premier League despite Wilson notching a goal in a thrilling 3-3 draw against champions Manchester City.
The Magpies, though, propelled themselves in the top four after winning seven out of eight Premier League matches before the turn of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, held at the end of the year in Qatar.
Wilson staked his claim for a place in Gareth Southgate’s 26-man squad for the finals after six goal contributions in as many matches, including a brace during Newcastle’s 4-0 thrashing of Aston Villa in front of the former Three Lions coach.
21st November 2022 – World Cup debut
A senior debutant with England in 2018, Wilson was deservedly included in the Three Lions’ 2022 World Cup finals squad along with Magpies teammates Kieran Trippier and Nick Pope.
The Coventry-born striker, who was plying his trade in non-league with Tamworth ten years prior, made his debut at a major international tournament during England’s opening group game against Iran, grabbing an assist following his introduction from the bench in a 6-2 win whilst featuring in the Three Lions’ 3-0 win against Wales.
23rd April 2023 – Eight in April
With the Magpies targeting UEFA Champions League qualification for the first time since 2002/03, Wilson played a pivotal role in United’s push for a top-four finish after netting eight times in the penultimate month of the Premier League calendar.
Despite only starting two matches and playing 309 minutes in April, Wilson netted braces against West Ham United, Everton and Southampton as well as scoring in victorious fixtures against European chasing sides Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, breaking Alan Shearer’s club record (7) for most Premier League strikes in a calendar month.
22nd May 2023 – Champions League qualification
After a 20-year absence, Newcastle returned to Europe’s elite footballing stage after securing fourth place in the English top-flight with a goalless draw against Leicester City in their penultimate league fixture of the 2022/23 campaign.
Wilson added to his best-ever goalscoring tally in a single Premier League season after grabbing a brace away at Leeds United, converting two penalties in a 2-2 draw, as well as netting in a memorable 4-1 win against Brighton & Hove Albion, ending 2022/23 with 18 goals in 31 outings.
19th September 2023 – Champions League bow
After being drawn against AC Milan, Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund in the group stages of the UEFA Champions League, Wilson was handed his European bow during the Magpies’ opening group fixture against AC Milan.
Wilson, who had signed a new one-year extension with the club four days prior, was introduced from the bench in the 63rd minute in front of over 65,000 spectators at the iconic San Siro as United secured a commendable point after a goalless draw against the seven-time European champions.
24th September 2023 – Blades of glory
Wilson began the 2023/24 campaign in positive fashion after scoring four goals in his opening six Premier League matches and played his part in United’s club record away league win.
The striker was one of eight different goalscorers on a historic afternoon at Bramall Lane, netting the visitors’ fourth goal of the contest after heading home from Trippier’s cross.
19th December 2023 – Ton up
Wilson marked a century of competitive appearances for Newcastle with a goal in United’s Carabao Cup quarter-final defeat against Chelsea.
Opening the scoring in the first-half at Stamford Bridge, it looked like the striker’s goal was sending United into the last-four before Mykhailo Mudryk’s stoppage-time strike sent the tie to penalties and, despite Wilson scoring in the shoot-out, missed attempts from Trippier and Matt Ritchie, ultimately, resulted in a cruel exit for the Magpies.
4th May 2024 – Wilson’s turf
United claimed a comfortable 4-1 away win against relegation-threatened Burnley during the final stages of the 2024/25 season, with Wilson opening the scoring at Turf Moor.
The striker moved into second place of the club’s all-time goalscoring list in the Premier League, with only Alan Shearer ahead of him at the time, while Howe marked his 100th game for Newcastle in the English top-flight with a win against his former club.
8th February 2025 – Up for the cup
After missing the majority of the first-half of the 2024/25 campaign due to injury, Wilson netted his first goal since May as United booked their spot in the Emirates FA Cup fifth round following a 3-2 win at Birmingham City.
Despite falling behind after 40 seconds, Newcastle turned the tie in their favour through Joe Willock’s leveller and Wilson’s close-range finish, leaving himself one goal shy of a half-century in black and white.
16th March 2025 – History makers
A day that will live long in the memory of United supporters, Wilson won his first domestic trophy in the Carabao Cup as Newcastle ended a 56-year wait for a piece of major silverware following a 2-1 win against Liverpool.
After goals from Dan Burn and Alexander Isak either side of half-time fired United into a healthy lead, Wilson was introduced in the closing stages at Wembley Stadium and, despite Federico Chiesa’s stoppage-time halving the deficit, Newcastle held on to claim their first trophy since the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1969.
26th May 2025 – Final game
Newcastle secured Champions League qualification for the second time in the last three years despite a 1-0 defeat against Everton on the final day of the season.
Requiring a victory to secure a guaranteed return to Europe’s elite football club competition, Newcastle were beaten by the Toffees but after Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest both fell to respective defeats against Manchester United and Chelsea, the Magpies secured a fifth-place finish as a visibly upset Wilson completed a lap of honour around St. James’ Park.
