Liverpool welcome Real Madrid to Anfield this evening in the pick of Wednesday night’s Champions League ties.
The teams have 21 trophies in this competition combined and have met in three finals previously, including in 2018 and 2022.
Arne Slot’s side head into the contest in fine form, with the Reds having won 13 of their last 14 games in all competitions. Liverpool lead the Premier League by an eight-point margin and have taken maximum points from their four Champions League games this season.
However, the Merseysiders will need to overcome a familiar foe this evening. After beating Real Madrid in the first three encounters between the sides – including the 1981 European Cup final – Liverpool have not tasted success in this fixture in eight attempts.
Their last win over Real Madrid came back in the 2008/09 campaign, when Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres inspired a 4-0 win over the Spanish side at Anfield.
Slot will be hoping his team can end their winless run against the Champions League holders, who arrive on Merseyside without several big names.
