Canada became the first side into the last 16 of their World Cup with a 1-0 win over South Africa. According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, Eustáquio received the first recognition of the last 32 after sending them through.

The group stage is over and the knockouts have begun. A drab tie was settled by a thumping strike from the Porto player on loan to MLS in the 92nd minute. South Africa had tried to slow the game to force extra time.

Carlo Ancelotti discussed how many minutes Neymar may or may not play. Moriyasu struck an upbeat note, saying Japan should aim to win the World Cup and that they have a chance against Brazil.

There were also late-night messages from Ouahbi, Koeman and Nagelsmann. Nagelsmann said Paraguay are an awkward opponent for Germany because of their defensive identity, while Havertz noted the quality of South American sides such as Ecuador.

Morocco are banking on Brahim to conjure something, and the Netherlands hope to dedicate a win to Gakpo. Koeman said the situation for Cody and his family is sad, that he has a powerful way of handling things, and that the team support him in a tragedy which shows football is a secondary concern.

Three last-32 ties follow on Monday, starting with Brazil against Japan.
