Fabio Capello warns Juventus against selling Matias Soulé to Roma but would not be surprised to see a swap deal between Federico Chiesa and Stephan El Shaarawy or Tammy Abraham.

Reports in Italy claim Roma and Juventus are discussing several players for a potential swap deal. Chiesa is a primary target for the Giallorossi, while Tammy Abraham and El Shaarawy are being monitored by the Old Lady.

Not many players have swapped Roma with Juventus in history, while Capello joined the Bianconeri from the Stadio Olimpico as a coach.

“Perhaps, I forgot about somebody. But I’d say Boniek and Emerson. Zibì joined Juventus from Roma and the Puma [Emerson] followed me to Turin in the summer of 2004. A great midfielder, he was my point of reference,” the former coach told Gazzetta.

Would he be surprised to see a swap deal between the two clubs?

“I’d be surprised to see Del Piero join Roma or Totti move to Juventus, but any other swap deal is not surprising. Times have changed,” said Capello.

“I am convinced that Abraham has the potential to do something more. It could be a good idea for Juventus, but it depends on how Motta wants to manage Dusan Vlahovic and, in general, the attack. Reinforcements must be agreed with the coach.

“Chiesa can do well at any club; he dribbles past opponents and he has intensity.”

Recent reports in Italy, however, suggest that Chiesa is more interested in joining a foreign club, potentially Manchester United or Liverpool.

Premier league odds suggest neither club is favourite for the title in England next season, but Chiesa wants a new experience and to play in the Champions League, something he would accomplish by joining the Reds.

“As we saw at the Euros, El Shaarawy is a winger who runs a lot and helps defensively. He provides balance,” continued Capello.

Roma mentioned ex-Frosinone loanee Matias Soulé during negotiations with Juventus, but Capello would not sell the Argentinean if he were at Juventus.

“I love players with quality and creativity and I’d think twice before selling someone like Soulé,” he admitted.

“In any case, I would not sell him to Roma or any other Italian team, and I am saying so because I know what happened with Edgar Davids.

“He hadn’t settled in at Milan, but we all knew he was a great midfielder. We wanted to sell him to a foreign club, but in the end, he joined Juventus, so the regret was double.”

Davids, a former Netherlands international, only made 31 appearances with Milan between the summer of 1996 and December 1997, when he joined Juventus.

During his time in Turin, he made 235 appearances, became one of the most iconic midfielders in the club’s history, and won several trophies, including three Serie A titles.
