Alberto Rentería Santana, secretary general of the Los Cabos municipal administration, said the driver accelerated after encountering a group in the road and was detained.

Authorities are continuing to investigate. The crash occurred alongside the World Cup being staged by the United States, Mexico and Canada, at the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula.

A similar incident occurred a week earlier.
