Football League World rounds up the latest Cardiff City transfer news

With over a week of the January transfer window having passed already, Cardiff City will be primed for no shortage of activity between now and the deadline at the start of February.

The Bluebirds' precarious position - second-from-bottom in the Championship at this moment in time - is sure to necessitate incomings this month, although further departures will also be on the agenda as the likes of Jamilu Collins and goalless Hertha Berlin loanee Wilfried Kanga have been tipped for the exit door.

Speculation is starting to intensify in accordance with the ever-increasing need for new signings, with Omer Riza confirming his intention to make three to four new acquisitions in January.

With that in mind, Football League World has summarised the latest transfer news coming out of the Cardiff City Stadium.

Cardiff City lodge unsuccessful bid for Peterborough United's Ricky-Jade Jones

As first revealed exclusively by Football League World on Monday evening, Cardiff lodged an enquiry for Peterborough United forward Ricky-Jade Jones.

Rather unconventionally, Riza then made little secret of the Bluebirds' interest by confirming that discussions had taken place over a potential move for Jones, who is out of contract with the League One side at the end of the season.

Owing to the 22-year-old's age, Posh will be able to collect a not-insignificant, tribunal-determined fee should his deal run down, but he could well be on the move in January amid tentative interest from Championship rivals Middlesbrough, who are also said to have identified the striker although such a move is highly unlikely unless talisman Emmanuel Latte Lath is sold this month.

Peterborough boss Darren Ferguson has broken his own silence following Riza's revelation, though, stating the club have rejected a bid from Cardiff. One would suspect Cardiff to continue testing the waters, given just how much they're crying out for fresh attacking firepower, but for the moment at least, the value of that offer and City's stance on returning with a new offer isn't clear.

Ahead of Peterborough's FA Cup third-round clash at Everton, Ferguson said of Cardiff's interest in Jones: "We have turned down their bid. Whether or not they will come back I don’t know, but this will be just the start of a lot of interest in him.

“We have to remember he is out of contract at the end of this season and if he went abroad he could leave for nothing and we can’t have players like that leaving without a fee.

"We have offered him a fantastic new contract, but it has not been signed."

Jones, who was clocked in as the world's fastest footballer in 2024, is renowned for his electric speed and would represent an intriguing capture for Cardiff.

The striker has scored 25 goals and counting across all competitions over the last season-and-a-half, having already hit double digits this time around. Just six of those, however, have come in League One action.

Meanwhile, Cardiff have seemingly been knocked back in their pursuit of fellow Peterborough player Hector Kyprianou.

City's interest in the Posh skipper was first called by FLW, as we revealed that Cardiff were keen on acquiring his signature alongside relegation rivals Plymouth Argyle. That has been corroborated by WalesOnline, although they have additionally reported Kyprianou, who is also out of contract in the summer, is likely to run his deal down before leaving on a free transfer.

Chairman Darragh MacAnthony has suggested as much too, meaning a January exit feels unlikely at this stage. Kyprianou was looked at by Cardiff, having worked under Riza at Leyton Orient.

It will be interesting to see if Cardiff reignite their interest in the 24-year-old midfielder come the summer, when he's likely to be available.

FLW also exclusively revealed interest from three League One clubs in taking highly-rated City midfielder Joel Colwill on loan for the rest of the season.

Per FLW sources, third-tier trio Bolton Wanderers, Bristol Rovers and Exeter City are all interested in Colwill. The 20-year-old is currently on loan with League Two side Cheltenham Town and has made a huge impression, scoring nine goals across all competitions and naturally prompting talk over a potential recall this month.

Riza is keen to test the Wales youth international at a higher level and confirmed interest from the latter two clubs. He said: "Definitely the latter two, Bristol Rovers and Exeter. Bolton I think have got other players they're looking at before Joel in different positions. There are a couple of other clubs interested in him as well.

"So he's got a long list of clubs in League One. When I was at Arsenal, I went out to League Two, then League One, and I think it's really good for the learning and experience of the player.

"He's been brilliant. That's credit to him and credit to Cheltenham for playing him and giving him the opportunity. He's playing well and enjoying it. You need to be out of your comfort zone in order to improve and keep progressing.

"It will be interesting, it's not definite he's going anywhere. He might stay at Cheltenham, but he might also go out [on loan somewhere else]. That could last right up until the end of the window."

It's said that Rovers' recent signing of ex-Cardiff midfielder Romaine Sawyers, who was most recently with AFC Wimbledon on a short-term deal following his release from the Bluebirds, isn't going to affect their pursuit of Colwill.

Meanwhile, Riza also confirmed loan interest from League One and League Two clubs in exciting young forward Michael Reindorf, who has played four times for the first-team after arriving from Norwich City's academy in the summer.

The 19-year-old is currently sidelined with an ankle injury but could be set to head out on loan if he recovers before the end of the month. Riza said of Reindorf: "He damaged his ankle and he's rehabbing now. Maybe another week or two potentially.

"There's potential for him to go out on loan if he's fit enough. He's got interest in League Two, potentially League One, League Two probably. Good interest."
