Former Sunderland midfielder Carl Robinson is in the frame for the vacant St Mirren job, with the 49-year-old named among the favourites, according to the Scottish Sun.

Robinson, capped 52 times by Wales, played 57 games and scored five goals for the Black Cats between 2004 and 2006. He left Western Sydney Wanderers in 2022 and is currently an assistant coach at MLS side Atlanta United. He also works in coach education for the Welsh FA and is eager to return to management.

The Buddies began their search after Stephen Robinson departed for Aberdeen earlier this month. They sit 10th on 24 points from 30 games. With Livingston bottom on 15 points and just one win, relegation looks highly unlikely.

St Mirren lifted the Scottish League Cup for only the second time in their history in December, beating Celtic 3-1 at Hampden Park. Robinson is one of several candidates, alongside Neil Lennon, Simo Valakari, Gary Naismith, Mark Wilson and former Dundee coach Tony Docherty.

Before the Premiership split they visit Falkirk, host Aberdeen and travel to Celtic. They also face Celtic in the Scottish Cup semi-final on 18 April. If appointed in time, Robinson could yet lead the Buddies into a busy climax.
