Ancelotti will take charge of the Selecao at the end of the current LaLiga season, with his official start date on May 26.

Madrid’s final game of the campaign takes place a day earlier, at home to Real Sociedad. Ancelotti will not be at the helm for the inaugural summer Club World Cup in the United States, which Los Blancos begin against Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal in Miami on June 18.

Madrid also travel to Sevilla before the end of the LaLiga season and host Real Mallorca at the Bernabeu on Wednesday night, defeat in which would see Barcelona officially crowned as champions after their thrilling 4-3 victory in Ancelotti’s final Clasico in charge on Sunday.

Brazil continue their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign in June and Ancelotti will be in place for games against Ecuador and Paraguay, becoming the first foreign manager in the country’s history.

They currently sit fourth in the CONMEBOL qualifying table after a humiliating 4-1 defeat by rivals Argentina in March, though remain on course to qualify for next summer’s tournament in the USA, Canada and Mexico with four games to go, with the top six nations all advancing automatically to the finals and the seventh entering an intercontinental play-off.

Ancelotti arrives with a glittering career managing in the club game and will now look to take that success onto the international stage.

The Italian had a year left on his contract at Real Madrid but negotiations with the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), led by Diego Fernandes, enabled him to be released early.

Fernandes is understood to have played a key role in the talks between Ancelotti, the CBF and Real Madrid, with the end result being a cordial conclusion.

Ancelotti is set to be replaced at Real Madrid by Xabi Alonso, who announced last week that he would be leaving Bayer Leverkusen at the end of the season.

Alonso, who played for Real Madrid for five years between 2009-14, led Leverkusen to the Bundesliga title last season without losing a game.

“This week the club and I have agreed that these two games are going to be my last as Bayer Leverkusen coach,” Alonso said on Friday.

“We have to enjoy this moment with mixed emotions. It is emotional, I spoke this morning with the players, the staff, so many people who have helped me during an unbelievable, fantastic three years.”
