Real Madrid are set to kick off their 2024/25 La Liga season on Sunday, fresh off their recent UEFA Super Cup victory.

This is two fewer than last season, yet they will have to compete in three additional tournaments (six more after the Super Cup).

The exits of key players like Toni Kroos, Nacho, Joselu, and Kepa Arrizabalaga have been partially compensated by the arrivals of Kylian Mbappe and Endrick.

However, replacing a goalkeeper, defender, midfielder, and attacker with two forwards leaves the squad with four open spots, raising concerns about depth.

Problems despite depth

A major issue that coach Carlo Ancelotti faces is the potential for injuries. The season has already begun with the unfortunate news of Eduardo Camavinga’s injury.

This is a significant blow, especially since the midfield is already considered the weakest area of the team. With Camavinga out, Ancelotti is left with just 18 outfield players to navigate the first 12 games of the season.

The Italian manager will need to be cautious to avoid further injuries, as happened last year, which could further deplete his already thin squad.

Another challenge is Ancelotti’s management style. He is known for relying heavily on the same core group of players, regardless of the opponent or circumstances. He rarely rotates his squad or gives players a rest unless absolutely necessary.

Ancelotti prefers consistency and sticks to his tried-and-tested methods, often avoiding changes unless they are minor tactical adjustments. He believes in his approach and defends it strongly, often saying that it works for the team.

Plenty of challenges ahead

The upcoming season is likely to be a gruelling one for Real Madrid. If they advance far in all competitions, they could end up playing more than 70 matches.

With a short squad and few substitutes, this could have serious consequences during the crucial final stretch when titles are on the line.

Last season, Real Madrid managed to overcome these challenges and had a successful run, though some key players showed signs of fatigue towards the end.
