Carlos Carvalhal is back in football management. The 60-year-old takes the reins at Famalicão following the departure of Hugo Oliveira to Strasbourg.
Carvalhal took a break from coaching last season, working as a co-commentator on Portuguese TV channel Sport TV.
In a long career that has taken in stints in Greece, Turkey, England, the United Arab Emirates and Spain, the Braga native is back in northern Portugal. Many of the clubs he has managed in the past are from the region: Braga on three separate occasions, Espinho, Freamunde, Vizela, Aves, Leixões and Rio Ave.
Famalicão enjoyed a solid season in 2025/26, finishing in fifth place in the standings and were unlucky to miss out on European football. Only Torreense’s shock victory over Sporting in the Portuguese Cup final denied the Minho club the chance to compete in the UEFA Conference League.
Carvalhal signs a one-year contract and will be officially presented by the club on Monday 20 July.
