Michael Carrick wants to make five signings this summer as Manchester United prepare to return to the Champions League.
United are on the verge of securing their first addition of the summer window, after reaching an agreement with Atalanta for midfielder Ederson.
The Brazil international is set to sign for the Red Devils for a fee in the region of £35m and will become Carrick’s first signing as permanent head coach.
Carrick is planning an active summer of recruitment, after leading United back into the Champions League. Ederson is understood to be the first of five desired arrivals, which will focus on a midfield rebuild and additions at left-back and centre-forward.
According to The Times, United plan to supplement the signing of defensive midfielder Ederson with two further additions in the engine room.
The club have been strongly linked with Mateus Fernandes, of West Ham, and are set to step up that interest after the Hammers were relegated from the Premier League.
United are also interested in signing left-back Lewis Hall from Newcastle United. Despite Luke Shaw’s ever-present campaign, the Red Devils have reservations over the 30-year-old’s ability to handle the added demand of European football, given his past fitness record.
Hall is seen as an option to compete with Shaw and as a long-term succession plan. Newcastle are determined to keep hold of the 21-year-old, but could consider a big bid after missing out on European qualification.
The final addition will be a centre-forward, to compete with Benjamin Sesko. Bryan Mbeumo was often used as a makeshift striker last season and United want to bring in another recognised number nine.
