Casemiro’s future to be decided based on how the season unfolds

So far this season, Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has preferred a midfield pairing of Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes in the Premier League.
The Brazilian’s resurgence has been impressive to say the least. Last season, when the Portuguese tactician came onboard, the former Real Madrid superstar hardly got a look-in.
With Amorim demanding more intensity, it looked certain that the five-time Champions League winner’s time at Old Trafford was drawing to a close.
But the 33-year-old worked hard in training and in the gym and his professionalism won over the ex-Sporting CP boss. And since then, Casemiro has been among the first names on the teamsheet.
His importance is such that Manuel Ugarte, signed as the Brazil international’s successor, has stated only three games this term while wonderkid Kobbie Mainoo has not been a part of the starting XI even once in the Premier League this campaign.
However, with the defensive midfielder’s current contract set to come to an end next summer, the Red Devils have a tough call to take.
The club does have the option of triggering a one-year extension but INEOS are unlikely to pay the midfield maestro his current wages.
Foreign clubs can begin negotiations with the United No.18 from January, with Saudi Pro League sides circling. They can offer him much bigger wages.
As per journalist Laurie Whitwell (Talk of the Devils podcast), United are yet to begin negotiations, and are waiting to see how the season unfolds before offering him a new deal.
Even if a new offer does materialise, the Sao Paulo-born star will likely need to agree a lower wage packet if he is to keep playing at the Theatre of Dreams.
“I don’t think there’s any talks ongoing. I could be wrong, but in a similar vein to Harry Maguire’s situation, I think it’s on the club to see how the season goes, and they’ve, in a way, got a bit of advantage there.
“I know that both players will doubtless have suitors, particularly on free transfers, but I think you’d expect, if they wanted to stay, United have got that leverage there.
“But yeah, with Casemiro, I had just assumed up to this point that he would leave at the end of this season, because the plus one, obviously, United have got in their favour, would then trigger another £280,000 a week before, then it goes up if they qualify for the Champions League by 25%.
“And so they just wouldn’t do that. Now as the season’s ongoing and he’s playing more, I don’t know, maybe they have a conversation around it, maybe he’s open to stay if he is open to having a lower salary. But I think we’re way too soon for that to be a consideration at the moment.”
It will be difficult for the 20-time English league champions to ignore his vast experience and winning mentality, especially if he keeps this form up.
But United do find a capable successor even if he does stay, given Casemiro has not completed 90 minutes even once this campaign. The likes of Adam Wharton and Elliot Anderson are among the frontrunners as things stand.
