The son of legendary Manchester United forward Mark Hughes tragically passed away from sudden adult death syndrome, an inquest has heard.

Tragic passing

In June, Hughes announced the heartbreaking news of his son Alex’s death.

Alex had been working for Grimsby Town as a player recruitment lead when he died at 38. He had also held roles at Manchester City, Fulham, AFC Fylde and Morecambe.

His playing career was brief, featuring spells at Stockport and Wrexham before he moved into analysis, joining Blackburn Rovers in 2007 as a performance analyst.

Alex’s funeral was held last month at St Peter’s Church in Prestbury, Cheshire.

Sir Alex Ferguson headed the list of mourners as they paid their respects to Alex. Among those in attendance were Bryan Robson, Ryan Giggs, Mike Phelan, and Martin Edwards.

Alex has left behind his wife Jess and two children, Sebastian and Leonardo.

Cause of death

An inquest heard that Alex lost his life after collapsing on the floor of his bedroom in his home. He was found by his sons on June 19.

His eldest son administered CPR, but sadly, efforts to revive him proved unsuccessful. Cheshire Coroners Court was informed that the cause of death had been determined by medics as sudden adult death syndrome.

As pointed by the Daily Mail, the condition usually occurs in young men and there are around 800 cases per year in England.

Area coroner Victoria Davies said, “A post-mortem report showed there was no signification result of toxicology. There was no alcohol or drugs or prescription drugs.”

“A cardiac pathology report showed sudden death with a normal heart. There were no other significant findings.”
