It’s hard to think of many Liverpool players from recent years who are more universally loved than Joël Matip.

The towering 6 ft 5 centre-back joined the Reds from Bundesliga side Schalke as a free agent in 2016 and went on to enjoy eight wonderfully successful years at Anfield.

He won every major honour, including the Premier League and Champions League, in that time

Matip departed the club at the end of his contract in 2024, having suffered a devastating ACL injury at the end of 2023. A few months after his exit, he confirmed his retirement from professional football.
