Celta Vigo entertain Atletico Madrid in a crucial LaLiga encounter on Sunday at Estadio Abanca-Balaídos.
The hosts have not beaten Atleti in their last 13 meetings, their longest winless run against the Rojiblancos.
Diego Simeone’s men have come out victorious from their last five trips to Vigo, their longest winning run against the Sky Blues in the Primera Division.
Celta Vigo will be without several key players as they prepare for this challenging fixture against the Madrid outfit. Javi Rueda, Mihailo Ristic, and Sergio Carreira are all confirmed absentees through injury. Rueda is sidelined with a muscle injury until late October, while Ristic faces a similar timeline with his muscle problem expected to keep him out until mid-October. Carreira’s ankle injury is also expected to sideline him until mid-October.
Despite their injury woes, head coach Claudio Giraldez has expressed confidence in his team’s ability to compete against top-level opposition. The Galician side will likely field their strongest available XI, with Borja Iglesias leading the line.
Simeone’s side will travel to Vigo with their own injury concerns to manage. Alexander Sørloth remains out with a muscle injury expected to keep him sidelined until mid-October. José Giménez is also unavailable due to muscle problems, while Johnny Cardoso continues his recovery from an ankle injury sustained in training. Thiago Almada rounds out the absentee list with his own muscle injury concerns.
However, Atletico received positive news with several key players called up for Spain’s international squad, including Marcos Llorente and Pablo Barrios, indicating their strong current form.
Celta have endured a very poor start to the campaign as they search for their first win in LaLiga. It’s only the third time in club history they have failed to win any of their first seven games in the league.
Their most recent outing, though, saw them earn a valuable 3-1 Europa League victory over PAOK Thessaloniki. In domestic competition, they lost 1-2 against Elche. The team’s attacking output has been limited, scoring just six goals so far.
Simeone’s side has found its rhythm after a stuttering start to the campaign. Los Rojiblancos delivered an emphatic 5-2 victory over Real Madrid in their most recent LaLiga encounter, with Julian Alvarez netting a hat-trick in a memorable performance.
They followed this up with an impressive 5-1 win over Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League, where Antoine Griezmann scored his 200th goal for the club. Their recent form suggests they’ve overcome early-season tactical adjustments, with Simeone acknowledging previous mistakes and implementing successful changes.
