Celtic icon Chris Sutton criticised Southampton for struggling to match the efforts of other relegation candidates.

Recently, Southampton again fell short to take some points in the Premier League. While nobody expected them to beat Nottingham Forest, the Saints should have pushed for a draw from the beginning.

Instead, they completely seemed a mismatch in front of the hosts.

Escaping relegation from such a situation is tough, agreed. But it doesn't have to be this much that a routine defeat becomes the norm.

Safe to say, Southampton don't know where are their next Premier League points coming from. Further, a rare 1-0 win against Everton has brought a huge relief for the Saints.

Otherwise, they may have embarrassed themselves further by going winless in the Premier League.

Now, Chris Sutton has also launched a critiquing season review for the Saints.

Speaking on the BBC Radio's Monday Night club, Daily Echo quoted Sutton saying: "Southampton have been particularly pathetic, haven't they? Six measly points is awful."

Though Southampton hasn't been fortunate with injuries, Sutton is absolutely spot on here.

No matter the circumstances, there are always a few winnable matches. Clubs like Manchester United, Tottenham, and West Ham have been below par this season, thus, there is a good likelihood of sharing points against them.

In this regard, Southampton must learn from the bottom table teams.

Alongside Southampton, Leicester City and Ipswich Town were also promoted from the Championship. Those teams and relegation suspects Everton and Wolves are also managing good results every other week.

The points difference between them and Southampton speaks for itself.
