Celtic legend Pat Bonner has backed Bhoys star Daizen Maeda to get back to form, amid promising performances from new boy Kelechi Iheanacho.

The Scottish giants brought in the Nigerian hitman just after the summer transfer window closed, as the 28-year-old was a free agent after he agreed to terminate his contract at Sevilla.

With the free agent arriving and Celtic missing out on Kasper Dolberg, the move attracted a huge amount of criticism.

However, Iheanacho has shown promising signs under Brendan Rodgers, who worked with the Nigerian at Leicester City, as he has already had three goal involvements.

On Wednesday night, the 28-year-old came on as a substitute for Maeda and scored Celtic’s only goal against Red Star Belgrade in the Europa League, as it finished 1-1 in Serbia.

Bonner believes that Iheanacho will now surely start as the striker and posed the question of where Maeda fits in now.

The 65-year-old though has no worries about Maeda continuing to make an impact at Celtic and expects to see him get back to form soon.

“I suppose the question now with Maeda is, where does he play if Iheanacho is going to start?”, Bonner said on BBC Sportsound following Celtic’s 1-1 draw against Red Star Belgrade at the Rajko Mitic Stadium.

“He’ll get his form back, though.

“He’s a quality player.”

Maeda has been at Celtic for more than three years now and has been a talismanic presence at the club, scoring 64 times alongside providing 30 assists in 168 all-competition appearances.

New boy Iheanacho is a natural striker and has started well at Celtic Park despite playing only 124 minutes of football.

Celtic face Hibernian at the weekend and it remains to be seen if Iheanacho will start up front and where Maeda might be slotted in.
