After today attention will turn to Steve Clarke’s Scotland side and their two remaining qualifiers where a draw away to Greece and a Hampden win over Denmark would see Scotland reach the World Cup Finals for the first time this century. You have to go all the way back to France 1998 to find Scottish participation in football’s biggest event so hopefully it can happen for Scotland over these two upcoming games.

For now though today feels like a pretty important round of fixtures in the Scottish Premiership with leaders Hearts entertaining Dundee United at Tynecastle, strugglers theRangers up at Dens Park as Dundee manager Steven Pressley eyes another big Glasgow scalp and an hour after those two games kick-off Celtic and Kilmarnock gets underway at Celtic Park in what Chris Sutton hopes is Martin O’Neill’s final match in interim charge of Celtic.

For context, a reminder of how things currently stand in the Scottish Premiership table. Hearts have 29 points from 11 games played, clearly title winning form that Celtic has to stop ourselves next month after winning all league matches before that, starting today.
We have 20 points from 10 games played, with a game in hand over Dundee United at Celtic Park. At the very least Celtic must ensure that the gap gets no wider today in a match Celtic must win. After the difficult away gave in the Europa League on Thursday night with yet more injury worries adding to the long list, that could be tougher than previously thought.

Meanwhile theRangers are on 15 points from 10 games and are looking increasingly irrelevant as far as being a title challenger is concerned. That second place finish might be a more realistic target for them, but they too really need to win against Dundee.
The games at Typecastle kick-off an hour ahead of the Celtic v Kilmarnock game so we all have full knowledge of those results at half-time today.
Celtic must win, it is as simple as that.
Arne Engels is a doubt, while Callum Osmand joins Alistair Johnston, Cameron Cart-Vickers, Kelechi Iheanacho and Jota on the injury list. The options at centre forward are Johnny Kenny, Shin Yamada and Daizen Maeda, who is probably more likely to start on the wing.

In midfield Engels probably won’t be risked so expect to see Reo Hatate returning to the starting XI for the first time under Martin O’Neill.

Anthony Ralston has had a tough week and there’s an argument for brining back Colby Donovan to the starting XI and at left back Kieran Tierney came in on Thursday night against FC Midtjylland but Martin may well opt for Marcelo Saracchi who has impressed the interim Celtic manager in the games against Falkirk and theRangers in the Premier Sports Cup.

Predicted Celtic team to face Kilmarnock – Schmeichel; Ralston, Trusty, Scales, Saracchi; McGregor (c), Hatate, Nygren; Maeda, Kenny and Tounekti. Subs: Sinisalo, Simpson-Pusey, Tierney, Donovan, McCowan, Bernardo, Balikwisha, Forrest, Yang, Yamada.

Earlier this week the Scottish FA announced the match officials for this afternoon’s game between Celtic and Kilmarnock, confirming that the match will be handled by Don Robertson who will be assisted by Calum Spence and Sean Carr. Another of our old pals, Greg Aitken will be on VAR today and he will be assisted by Ross Hardie.

No Sky Sports or even Premier Sports today so the only live streaming today is via Celtic TV or subscribers based outside of Britain and Ireland. Sportscene will be screened on the BBC Scotland channel at 7.15pm on Sunday and will then be repeated at 11.45pm on BBC One Scotland, and BBC Radio Scotland’s Sportsound will be on air throughout the afternoon so you can get updates there too.
There’s always a replay of the entire match on Celtic TV to all subscribers which usually goes up around midnight, so you could catch up tomorrow.

More a plea than a prediction, just win it Celtic. Let’s got for a hard-fought 2-0 victory. That will do nicely. The Celtic support will have to play a huge part today, especially with the Green Brigade starting their six game ban this afternoon. Let’s make plenty of noise for the Bhoys. Back the team…
