The latest issue of the Celtic View is a feast of football and music, celebrating Celtic’s cultural heritage in the same week that Oasis played their first gigs since reforming after 16 years.
And among the many highlights of the Celtic View is an interview with Gary Mounfield, better known to music fans as ‘Mani’, the legendary bass player of The Stone Roses and Primal Scream.
The Stone Roses, in particular, were one of the key influences on Oasis, and the bands obviously share Manchester roots, even if the football loyalties are divided – Mani is a United fan while the Gallagher brothers are City supporters.
Indeed, United walk out on to the Old Trafford pitch to a classic Stone Roses track, This is the One.
Speaking to the Celtic View, Mani spoke about his own football allegiances which, over and above Manchester United, also include an affection for Celtic and a soft spot for the Republic of Ireland.
Mani told the View: “I was always brought up to firstly support United, because I’m from Manchester, then Celtic.
“Celtic has always been my second team. And the Republic of Ireland. I don’t follow England at all. That’s how I was brought up.
“All my uncles and the Irish half of the family are all Republic of Ireland with leanings to Celtic and United. There’s very few City fans in my family!
“There’s always a few who go against the grain though, isn’t there? Check this out, I’ve got twin boys, Gene and George. Gene’s United, George is City! Go figure!
“I used to love the fact that Celtic had the numbers on the back of the shorts. There’s a weird memory!
“I used to wonder why that was and then I thought, it was obviously so the defender that Jinky Johnstone had just skelped could see who’d just had ‘em as he’s burning past!
“I’ve been up to one Celtic game, it was a game against Boavista. It was amazing. I went with a hat on, a bit of disguise. Did it work? No way. I was getting mobbed, but it was beautiful.”
