The Athletic’s Transfer Tiers turns to centre-backs, ranking nine summer targets across three bands.

According to NY Times, Tier One features Alessandro Bastoni, Josko Gvardiol and Nico Schlotterbeck, all left-footed. Bastoni’s bruising 2026 did not dent his standing. Gvardiol’s January leg break aside, only Guardiola’s exit raises availability questions, while Schlotterbeck’s Dortmund deal to 2031 carries a selective Champions League clause that excludes Bayern Munich.

Tier Two includes Micky van de Ven, Marcos Senesi and Jan Paul van Hecke. Van de Ven’s speed and carrying impress after earlier hamstring issues at Tottenham, though opinions on his ceiling vary. Senesi is a free agent with elite build up metrics, and Van Hecke’s rugged consistency at Brighton drew no votes below this tier.

Maxence Lacroix, John Stones and Axel Disasi make up Tier Three. Lacroix has been restored under Oliver Glasner at Crystal Palace, winning the FA Cup in 2025. Stones, 31, departs Manchester City after seven significant injuries and 55 missed games since last season, yet still drew Tier Two backing and was picked for the World Cup ahead of Harry Maguire.

Disasi’s West Ham loan coincided with sharper defending after a disappointing Chelsea spell, he is imposing in the air but less progressive with the ball. Left-footed balance appears prized, and elite sides could still pivot to lower tiers if priority targets move.
