Former Championship star Shaun Barker has claimed that Sheffield Wednesday star Barry Bannan is a player who opposition teams do not want to see at the edge of their box.

The 35-year-old midfielder is a key player in Danny Rohl’s midfield and this season has started every single league game for the Owls.

At the weekend, Bannan’s stunning strike from the edge of Derby County’s box in the 64th minute inspired the Owls to make a 2-1 comeback after trailing 1-0 for the majority of the game.

Barker, who was impressed with Bannan’s strike, praised the Sheffield Wednesday captain for his first touch to control the ball at the edge of the Derby box and then finish with a brilliant strike.

The ex-Championship defender pointed out that Bannan is not a player who opposition teams want to see on the edge of their box, as he has time and time again proved that he possesses the quality to score brilliant goals.

“He is certainly not the player you want to see drop to on the edge of the box”, Barker on Rams TV.

“His first touch was exceptional and he only needed that first touch to set his sights on the far corner and he finished brilliantly.

I think you recognise that Eiran Cashin noticed that it was Bannan and dropped almost on the line to hopefully get a touch, but he found the top corner and it was a brilliant finish.

“It is what he has done year after year; he has got that quality and unfortunately, it fell to him.”

Sheffield Wednesday captain Bannan has featured in 423 games for the Owls since joining them in 2015 from Crystal Palace.
