Arteta: Arsenal will “take it as it comes”

Speaking to TNT Sports, Mikel Arteta insisted that Arsenal will “take it as it comes” at the BayArena tonight.

“The first one is here, away. We’re always in the same mindset to win the game and be as dominant as we can,” he explained, reflecting on the differences posed by two-legged knockout ties.

Bayer Leverkusen “have a lot of resources to cause you problems. They are well organised in the attacking phase,” the Spaniard added.

As for the absence of Leandro Trossard, he added: “He wasn’t feeling quite right and we left him out.”

A long way from Neverlusen

Arsenal are in great form… but the same can’t be said for their hosts, who haven’t managed to hit the heights of their 2023/24 unbeaten season in the Bundesliga that gave them the Neverlusen moniker.

They sit 6th in the league table, 22 points adrift of leaders Bayern Munich, and have won just one of their last five games in all competitions – a 1-0 away win at Hamburg last week.

Havertz was “the player for special moments”

Speaking to TNT Sports’ Archie Rhind-Tutt, Bayer Leverkusen’s Sporting Director has reminisced about Kai Havertz’s days with the German club.

Simon Rolfes revealed: “In the academy already he was the go-to guy, the guy who decided the games.

“He was always the player for the special moments.”Selling the German international to Chelsea generated much-needed funds for the club, who went on to achieve an unbeaten domestic double in 2023/24.

“That was decisive that we could invest this money,” Rolfes admitted.

As for what he’s hoping to see from die Werkself tonight, the 44-year-old said: “We need a top performance but stable in defending and set pieces, but stable in the way we play forward. That’s also important.

“Mistakes can decide games as well in transition so we need a solid, stable performance from the whole team.”

REPORT | Newcastle 1-1 Barcelona

Up on Tyneside, there was plenty of late action as Newcastle and Barcelona settled for a share of the spoils.

Harvey Barnes looked to have picked up a crucial advantage for Eddie Howe’s men, but a Lamine Yamal penalty in the dying seconds set up a winner-takes-all clash at the Spotify Camp Nou next week.
