Champions League – Liverpool: Arne Slot already under pressure
Champions League – Liverpool: Arne Slot on the hot seat
Liverpool are going through a rough patch. Defeated by Crystal Palace in the Premier League and then overturned by Galatasaray in the Champions League (1-0), the Reds have just suffered two consecutive setbacks—a rarity under Arne Slot. While a full-blown crisis has not yet erupted, the warning signs are mounting and could soon become impossible to ignore. As The Athletic points out,
“the problems that have plagued this season ultimately proved costly, with a lack of efficiency and concentration.”
Victor Osimhen could have punished the defense even more severely, and the Turkish side created several chances that might have widened the scoreline.
More than the results themselves, it’s the manner that is cause for concern. BBC Sport observes that Liverpool were lacking "in both boxes," unable to convert their chances while leaving huge gaps for their opponents in a raucous atmosphere. Adding to the woes are injuries to Alisson and Hugo Ekitike, compounding an already fragile situation.
Arne Slot’s management is now under scrutiny. The Mirror questions his decision to leave Mohamed Salah on the bench and to deploy Jeremie Frimpong in an unusual role ahead of Szoboszlai—a gamble that backfired quickly. Some key players have not been spared criticism either: Ibrahima Konaté looked shaky at the back, while Florian Wirtz, expected to be a major technical link, is struggling to meet expectations and has become a recurring concern.
For Slot, a swift response is needed. Because while Liverpool still maintain a generally positive league trajectory, the double setback against Palace and Galatasaray has exposed structural flaws that must be addressed urgently. The upcoming Premier League fixture already looks set to be a decisive test for the Dutch manager’s tenure.
