The Blades have experienced a turbulent 2025/26 campaign both on and off the pitch, spending most of their time fighting inside of the relegation zone instead of towards the promotion-paying positions.

Ruben Selles was sacked after a dreadful start to the term which brought about the return of Chris Wilder, but results didn’t drastically improve under the United legend.

However, recent weeks seem to have marked an improvement in the Steel City side’s performances, with that culminating in a 3-0 derby day victory over rivals Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.

But, just as things seemed to be heading back in the right direction on the pitch, United’s owners have managed to heap a whole load of controversy back onto the club.

Sheffield United owners reportedly up for selling stake in the club

It was recently revealed by journalist Alan Nixon via his Patreon channel that COH Sports, Sheffield United’s owners, were to assess the club financially during the early stages of 2026 and could potentially seek out a sale.

This was followed up by the shocking news that COH Sports also supposedly showed an interest in taking over the Blades’ arch-rivals, Sheffield Wednesday, after they fell into administration, which went down like a lead balloon with supporters.

Despite releasing a club statement which affirmed how committed they were to achieving success with Sheffield United, further reports have now emerged that their owners would be willing to relinquish some control of the side.

According to the Daily Mail, the US-based group are open to sell a stake of up to 20 per cent in the Blades, to investors with the right experience.

This discussion over their future in control of United reportedly came after the ongoing sale of Wednesday triggered calls to the red side of Sheffield.

As a result, COH Sports have now hired sports consultants Penwick to assess levels of interest in the club.

Sheffield United supporters may have mixed feeling about potential investment

Since COH Sports bought Sheffield United in December 2024, supporters haven’t had too much to cheer about.

They witnessed their club just slip behind Burnley and Leeds United in the title race, lose to Sunderland in the play-off final before starting the 2025/26 campaign miserably.

Naturally, after such a successive run of things going wrong, some pressure starts to fall on the new ownership. Some United fans will more than likely welcome a partial sale of the club, with calls for someone with more of a football background to be brought in.

However, others may not want to see their owners already selling a stake in the club, as it could be directly linked to a lack of faith. If COH Sports are already willing to cash in on 20 per cent of the Blades, it may not be too much longer before they pursue a full exit.
