Charlton Athletic are set to host the Unity Cup in May, which could see a return to The Valley for Ademola Lookman and Joe Aribo with Nigeria.
Charlton Athletic have enjoyed a positive return to the Championship, with Nathan Jones’ side on course to survive without too much stress.
That continues the progress the Addicks have made in recent years, and they will see this as just the start of the journey, as they look to establish themselves at this level, before eventually trying to reach the Premier League once again.
It’s fair to say that Charlton have endured a lot over the past 10-15 years, and one frustration for the supporters will be that they had to sell several key talents.
Joe Gomez joined Liverpool after just one season at the club, whilst they only got to see Ademola Lookman over two seasons before he moved to Everton. Another standout player, Joe Aribo, did make huge contributions on the pitch, but he departed for Rangers when his contract was up for a training fee.

Whilst there will be a sense of pride that those players, who all joined the club as youngsters, have gone on to have very good careers, there will be some sadness that they couldn’t achieve more at Charlton, especially in the case of Gomez and Lookman.
However, Charlton fans may get the chance to see two of their former favourites return to the club this summer, as the club announced they will be hosting the 2026 Unity Cup, which will feature Nigeria, with Aribo and Lookman hoping to be part of the Super Eagles’ squad.
The club update explained how India, Zimbabwe and Jamaica will join Nigeria in the four-team tournament, and they will be split in two to play a semi-final.
The winners of those games will then advance to the Grand Final, which will be played a few days later, along with a third-place play-off, with all the fixtures held at The Valley over the space of four days.
As well as the potential Nigerian connection with Aribo and Loookman returning to South East London, three current players contracted to Charlton will hope to be part of the Jamaica squad in Amari’i Bell, Tyreece Campbell and Karoy Anderson.
This isn’t the first time the Unity Cup has been held at The Valley, as it was also the venue for the event in 2004, when Nigeria, Ireland and Jamaica were participating.
This could be interesting to Charlton fans, and it’s an event that the club will benefit from.
There is a lot of diversity in South East London, so it’s right that it’s celebrated in the area, and this is a chance for all different communities to come together over football.
The fact Charlton’s stadium is seen as the right one is a positive for the club, and you would expect them to be great hosts.

It will be a good watch for football fans in general, as there is some real talent in those teams, with Nigeria the standout nation on that front.
Aribo will hope to be involved given his connection to the club, and Lookman is certain to play, with the Atlético Madrid attacker undoubtedly a star man for the Super Eagles.
So, it will be nice for them to return to a ground that is close to their hearts, and Charlton fans will give them a good reception, along with the trio of Jones’ squad that could be involved with Jamaica.
