Charlton Athletic must ensure they extend the contract of Jamaica international attacker Tyreece Campbell.

Charlton Athletic have enjoyed a reasonable start to the campaign, albeit there are growing concerns about their level, but one man who has excelled thus far and must be prioritised for next summer’s contract negotiations is Tyreece Campbell.

Following their promotion to the Championship via the League One play-offs last season, Charlton have started the campaign steadily but with a dip in their performance level.

Nathan Jones was backed by the club’s hierarchy and the squad, not necessarily transformed, was majorly improved as the Addicks seek to become a competitive force in the second-tier once again.

Their recruitment pointed towards Charlton wanting to play with something like a back three with wing-backs, but they have thus far gone with the 4-2-3-1 system, which Jones changed to mid-way through last year to eventually propel the south Londoners to promotion.

Whatever the system that is being deployed, a space in the eleven is being and will be carved out for Jamaica international Tyreece Campbell – who Charlton simply must tie down.

Charlton must tie Tyreece Campbell down

In the summer of 2026, 22-year-old Tyreece Campbell is out of contract at Charlton, but the club have the option to extend that by a further year.

That is an option that the club simply must trigger sooner rather than later in order to protect his value and ensure Charlton keep hold of one of their prized assets.

A versatile attacker, Campbell can play out-wide or up-front and has, especially under the management of Jones, been able to broaden his game.

Blessed with natural technical ability, wingers or attackers in a Jones team have to be hard-working and he has added an industry to his individual game to match his intelligence.

Having been with the Addicks since Under-9 level, Campbell first broke into the Charlton first-team picture back in the 2021/22 season, but would only make two competitive appearances that term.

However, in the three full seasons since then, he's made 29, 40 and 53 appearances in all competitions respectively, with the 24/25 campaign arguably being his best yet, having bagged nine goals in all competitions.

Playing 44 regular season games in League One last season, as well as starting all three of their play-off games too, the Jamaican played a pivotal role in helping the club win promotion, and has kept his starting role in Jones' side during the early exchanges of this season.

Looking capable of more than holding his own now at a higher level, it is imperative that Charlton ensure he remains content at The Valley and is contracted until 2027 at the earliest.

Charlton could eventually cash in on Tyreece Campbell

If he was to be contracted for a further year then it would well be that Charlton find themselves in a position where they can cash in on him.

If Campbell continues on his current trajectory then the likelihood is, regardless of whether Charlton stay up this season or not, there will be suitors for him next summer.

With the option for a further year, Charlton can protect themselves in that regard, but they then may be forced into a sale if it becomes clear that Campbell will only be willing to be contracted for a further year.

Charlton spent reasonably heavily this summer and so a sale in 12 months’ time wouldn’t be a major surprise, and protecting Campbell’s value could be key to that.

If he is to be sold with just 12 months left on his deal, then the Addicks may well find themselves shortchanged of the transfer fee they could receive for him if they ink him to a new long-term contract, as that would force interested parties to pay a premium price should they wish to prize him away from The Valley.

It could also be that next summer further boosts his value and interest in him if he was to perform well for Steve McClaren’s Jamaica, with the Reggae Boyz in an excellent position to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
