It's a huge game for both sides as we approach the run-in, given the current nature of the relegation picture. There are eight teams involved, albeit Sheffield Wednesday are set to guarantee one of the three places in League One imminently.

Both Charlton and Portsmouth will be keen to avoid a return to the third tier after two seasons for Pompey and one campaign for Nathan Jones' side so far. Survival in the Championship is crucial because it protects a club’s financial stability, reputation, and competitive future.

The Championship offers significantly higher broadcast revenue, sponsorship appeal, and matchday income than EFL League One. Relegation often triggers player departures, wage cuts, and a reduced budget, making promotion back far from guaranteed.

Beyond those obvious things, fan morale drops, commercial value declines, and rebuilding can take years. In short, survival preserves momentum and ambition. Neither side is keen to suffer the drop and a six-pointer presents a huge opportunity for both.

With a full slate of League One and League Two action alongside the UEFA Champions League, there are just two Championship games being played on Tuesday evening.

Both clashes kick off at 7.45pm, with Wrexham travelling to face Bristol City and Charlton hosting Portsmouth. However, the primary slot has been taken over at 7.30pm on the Sky Sports Football and Sky Sports Main Event channels by Blackpool vs Mansfield Town.

Instead, Wrexham's game against the Robins is on the Sky Sports+ channel and Portsmouth's trip to The Valley is on the red button or can be accessed via logging into the Sky Sports app. The livestream feature will not be available on Sky Go, with the Sky Sports app the only place to stream it on a phone, laptop, or tablet device.

Fans can access Sky Sports with a Sky TV subscription, or via the NOW streaming service, with the sports package costing £34.99 per month. Alternatively, if you're just interested in watching how things play out at and aren't interested in watching Sky Sports for the remainder of the month, customers can purchase a one-day NOW pass for £14.99.

All the goals and major talking points from Charlton against Portsmouth can be seen on Sky Sports News during the game, with Gilette Soccer Special showing the majority of those from the Championship, League One, and League Two as they happen.

In the reverse fixture, a 98th-minute strike from Yang Min-Hyeok won the game for Portsmouth in dramatic fashion just after Christmas. Harvey Knibbs thought he had rescued a point for the Addicks just two minutes prior, too.

It was the first time the pair had done battle in the second tier of English football since April 2000, having faced one another eight times in the Premier League between 2003 and 2007.

Between December 2017 and February 2024, in the league both are looking to avoid a return to, they went head-to-head 12 times. Charlton won seven and lost just two of those clashes.

Both will be eyeing three points in a fixture which sees them separated by just six points, albeit Pompey have two games in hand on many sides around them. Charlton will be close to a points total where they will feel safe, should they win at home.

John Mousinho's men have struggled on their travels since their return to the second tier, but a win would be huge in keeping them as far away as possible from the sides above Sheffield Wednesday but below the dotted line.
