The 33-year-old ended a run of five games without a goal by scoring a brace against Wigan Athletic at The Valley last weekend, which took his tally for the season to 15 in all competitions.

Charlton boss Nathan Jones was full of praise for the forward in the aftermath of his side's victory over the Latics.

"Matty Godden is class," Jones said.

"He has had a wonderful career and is a goalscorer.

"We brought him here to score goals for Charlton Athletic and Matty Godden has given us the return we wanted."

Godden has featured in all bar one of Charlton's league games in 2025 so far, showing how important he has been during their excellent recent run of form, which has left them sitting comfortably inside the play-off places with automatic promotion not yet out of the question.

Godden has experience of winning automatic promotion to the Championship, having lifted the League One title with Coventry City at the end of the 2019/20 campaign.

There is no doubt that he will want to add another promotion to his CV, and if he can recreate the form he produced towards the end of that title-winning season with Coventry, Charlton will be in with a good chance of returning to the second tier.

During the last twelve league games that Godden played for the Sky Blues before the season was curtailed in 2020, he scored 11 goals for Mark Robins' side as they went unbeaten, with back-to-back hat-tricks away at Wycombe Wanderers and Tranmere Rovers included in that run of form.

Charlton have nine league games remaining before the end of the 2024/25 campaign, but if they finish in a play-off place, there could be 12 fixtures left for the Addicks to play.

If Godden can go on a run of goalscoring form similar to the one he produced at the end of the 2019/20 season for Coventry, there is no reason why Charlton cannot achieve promotion, especially if their impressive defensive record continues.

The Addicks will not have given up hope of closing the gap to Wycombe Wanderers in second place, and with them set to face the Chairboys away from home on Easter Monday, another hat-trick from Godden at Adams Park would be more than welcome for the South Londoners.

Godden's goals could be decisive for Charlton

No team in the top half of the League One table has scored fewer goals than Charlton at this stage of the season, so Godden adding to his 12 league strikes will be crucial if the Addicks are going to be successful between now and the end of the campaign.

He has already scored against his former clubs, Stevenage and Peterborough United, this season, so he should have confidence that he can kick-start another run of goalscoring form when Charlton face the Posh at London Road this weekend.

Godden has never scored more than 14 goals in a League One season, but it seems likely that he could better that this term, and if he can recreate the kind of form he produced for Coventry during the run-in back in 2020, Charlton will be in with a good chance of fulfilling their promotion ambition.
