Chelsea submitted a concrete €50m offer for Mile Svilar in recent days, which Roma swiftly rejected. The goalkeeper left Benfica on a free before moving to the Italian side.

According to Corriere dello Sport, the call was made jointly by new sporting director Tony D’Amico and head coach Gian Piero Gasperini. The report described a sale as a significant sacrifice given the club’s delicate finances.

Roma must post a positive result between €50m and €60m by 30 June to comply with UEFA financial fair play. Failure could jeopardise their participation in the 2026/27 Champions League.

Had it been accepted, Chelsea’s bid would have largely resolved that shortfall. Even so, the club chose to keep their goalkeeper, which could open the door to departures for marketable assets such as Evan Ndicka, Manu Koné and Matías Soulé.

Retaining Svilar also reflects the difficulty of finding a comparable replacement. The club recall the period between Alisson Becker’s 2018 sale to Liverpool and Svilar’s 2022 arrival, when goalkeeping was a persistent problem.
