Hounslow Herald reports that Chelsea have been fined £325,000 and West Ham £300,000 after a mass confrontation marred their Premier League match at Stamford Bridge in January. An independent regulatory commission imposed the penalties after both clubs admitted failing to ensure their players behaved in an orderly manner.
The flashpoint came in the 95th minute of Chelsea’s 3-2 comeback win on 31 January. West Ham winger Adama Traore pushed Marc Cucurella, drawing a response from Joao Pedro.
A melee involving nearly 20 players followed, and West Ham’s Jean-Clair Todibo was sent off for grabbing Pedro by the neck.
In its written reasons, the commission judged Traore’s reaction excessive but said Cucurella was not blameless, suggesting he sought to provoke a response on getting up.
Chelsea’s larger sanction reflected a poorer disciplinary record, with the case marking their third breach of FA Rule E20.1 this season. The panel also criticised three Chelsea players for attempting to whip up the home crowd during the disorder, saying there was no justification. Prior offences were cited as a key factor in setting the penalties, and both clubs were warned about future conduct, while the result remains unchanged.
