Chelsea beat Man City 2-0 to go top of WSL table: Five things we learned | OneFootball

Chelsea extended their winning run, as they beat rivals Manchester City at Stamford Bridge to go top of the Women’s Super League table.

Goals from Mayra Ramirez and Guro Reiten in the 75th and 79th minute respectively were enough to see Sonia Bompastor continue her dream start in the league, and leapfrog City in the title race.

While there was nothing to separate these teams for much of the match, the reigning champions showed their class as they asserted their authority in the battle for their sixth consecutive title.

Here’s five things we learned from the match…

Bompastor’s winning streak continues

Chelsea extended their 100% winning streak under new manager Bompastor while also ending City’s unbeaten run in the process. The Blues have now won 10 games in a row in all competitions. Bompastor has now become the first manager in WSL history to win her first seven league games.

Title race heats up

Chelsea go two points clear of Man City at the top of the WSL table, dominating City at Stamford Bridge. The reigning Champions also have a game in hand on the Citizens and have taken a huge step towards winning their sixth consecutive league title. However, the title race is far from over as this was only City’s second league defeat in 24 games.

Ramirez wins battle of the strikers

Mayra Ramirez scored the opening goal of the game with Chelsea’s first shot on target, in the 75th minute. The Colombian striker scored her third WSL goal of the season and has been filling in brilliantly for the injured Sam Kerr since her arrival. Meanwhile, top scorer of the league, Bunny Shaw failed to make her mark on the game, missing a big chance early on in the first half and being anonymous for the majority of the game.

Stamford Bridge rocking

With just under 20,000 fans in the stadium, Stamford Bridge was rocking. There has been a lot of talk about the atmosphere at Stamford Bridge vs Kingsmeadow, but today was a great example of how loud the support at the Bridge can be. The current attendance record at Chelsea’s main stadium is 39,398, set in April 2024 during the UEFA Women’s Champions League semi-final second leg against Barcelona. While they didn’t beat that tonight, it was a step in the right direction for creating a roaring atmosphere at WSL games. Eight-time Olympic gold medal winner Usain Bolt was also in attendance supporting his fellow Jamaican Bunny Shaw.

Hemp injury concern

Lauren Hemp missed her first WSL game of the season, which proved to be a crucial miss for City as they lacked any real attacking threat and failed to score a goal for the first time this season. The forward was out with a minor knee injury which also kept her out of City’s midweek Champions League fixture against Hammarby. The extent of her injury is still uncertain, but fans will be hoping she will not be out for long.
