Chelsea’s summer is in full swing, with players coming and going at some pace.

The BBC’s Nizaar Kinsella has just written a piece about Bournemouth trying to sign a defender, and it looks like they’ve got a Blue in their sights.

“Among the alternative options of interest is teenager Josh Acheampong,” Kinsella writes.

“But Chelsea are only entertaining loan offers as it stands, although the 19-year-old continues to seek assurances over game time.”

The young academy produced defender has also been linked to Aston Villa in recent days. There is no chance that Chelsea sell such a promising player, but a loan could prove tempting depending on what happens with incoming players in the back line. Sales could create a perfect space for the teenager to step into, but new additions could also squeeze him out.

Chelsea must continue Acheampong integration

It’s only natural that a young player would “seek assurances over game time,” after a season where he had his breakout, but we hope it doesn’t lead to anything more serious.

There is the opportunity to play Acheampong so much more than we have done, as manager Enzo Maresca’s trust in him grows. He can play right back, in the centre of a 3, or even inverting centrally. He did all of them really competently last year, and if this club is being run right, should get the same chances plus a lot more this season.

A loan is always a nice solution – but right now he should be close to our second choice right back. Why loan someone out who is that senior?

It’s a question that will be answered more broadly through the squad – the Conference League gave a superb chance to use young players without much risk last season. Now we’re in the Champions League, how are minutes affected for our Cobham talents?
