Well, it’s not even really an update, as it doesn’t sound like there is anything to update, but Fabrizio Romano has the latest.

Chelsea are trying to sign Rennes centre back Jeremy Jacquet this transfer window. We have all seen how public this has now become, which I never feel is a good thing.

Sources: Chelsea hold positive talks to sign Jeremy Jacquet and close on fee agreement!

The issue at the moment is not on the player side, but it is agreeing a fee with his club. It seems that at the moment, Rennes are just asking too much for him, at least more than what Chelsea want to pay.

There was even talk yesterday of Chelsea potentially turning to alternative options, with two other names mentioned as being on their shortlist.

But since Friday/Saturday, there has been no breakthrough after what is now 3/4 days of talks apparently, and Chelsea fans will be getting that feeling of deja vu. They are used to deals breaking down, public pursuits of a player, days and days of the same updates, then it not going through. It’s happened a lot lately.

Romano’s latest feels familiar

Jeremy Jacquet playing for Rennes.

The transfer expert said, as picked up on X:

‘Chelsea already went on their mission to France on Friday, still no agreement for Jacquet. Rennes want 65-70m euros, Chelsea want to spend less. Chelsea WILL sign a defender this window with 3 players on their shortlist.’

Pursuit over?

Chelsea fans will feel that this one is now over and they will pivot to another target, because they have been there and see it all before in the last few years under this ownership.

Will they even sign a centre back? Well, there’s time left in this window, but not loads of it.
