Aggie Beever-Jones has been scoring goals for club and country over the last months – finishing as Chelsea’s top scorer last season.
But in an interview with the club’s official website, she said that goalscoring isn’t necessarily everything – even for a striker.
“For me personally, it’s always about building on the season before and improving constantly.
“Sometimes that might not be reflected in the goals and the assists.
“I’ve always said my performance comes first, and everything else will fall into place. That’s the player I am. It’s never as easy, as strikers get recognised for scoring goals, and the work around that doesn’t always get noticed.”
But she admitted that she does love scoring goals.
“You can have a good game and not score, and that’s okay, but I’d be lying if I didn’t say I love scoring. It’s one of the best feelings in the world. Hopefully, I can continue to build on that, keep fighting and keep playing for the club that I love.”
Beever-Jones also spoke about the dead leg injury that had recently disrupted her form and meant she was out of action.
“It was a good start to the season for me personally, especially at the beginning of the season.
“I then picked up a little bit of a knock, which set me back, but that’s part of football.
“It was frustrating to interrupt my rhythm, but it gave my body some reset time, which is always needed in football, especially when you have triple game weeks and are playing a lot of minutes. Everything happens for a reason, and I’m happy to be back.”
She also referred obliquely to Chelsea’s recent form; although they remain unbeaten in the Women’s Super League, they currently sit second in the table behind Manchester City, with three draws on the board.
“Hopefully, I’m finding my feet again and getting back into the swing of things. It’s definitely a marathon, not a sprint. It’s never smooth sailing, individually or collectively; there are always bumps on the road.
“We’ll get the results, and will come back on top. We’ve got a long way to go until the end of the season.”
