Chelsea claimed a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Lincoln City in the EFL Cup as the Blues managed to scrape past the spirited hosts.
Chelsea struggled to deal with Lincoln’s tactics, losing several aerial duels. The Blues looked like a shadow of the team that had beaten Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 months ago.
Starting Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez received a red card in the Premier League, and Filip Jorgensen was named in the XI ahead of the Spaniard for the Lincoln tie.
Unfortunately, Jorgensen was unable to stake a claim for the starting berth with an atrocious showing between the sticks. He is just not good enough for the club.
On more than one occasion, the Chelsea goalkeeper, who signed for £20.7 million, stormed out to claim the ball only to punch the air.
One time, he took out teammate Wesley Fofana. Another time, he dropped the ball to a Lincoln player, and it took a mix-up to prevent them from netting the Blues.
Chelsea’s defensive woes are apparent, but it doesn’t help that the Blues lack a reliable goalkeeper behind the back four.
That Sanchez, as bad as he can be, looks better than Jorgensen says a lot about how bad Chelsea’s goalkeeping situation is.
The blame lies with the sporting directors. The Europa Conference League winners were aware of this issue and attempted to sign Mike Maignan.
However, when the transfer did not materialise, they abandoned their pursuit.
Chelsea could have kept Djordje Petrovic or Mike Penders, but decided to gamble with Sanchez and Jorgensen, who already showed they were not good enough.
It is a gamble that is already backfiring. Chelsea may have survived Lincoln, but sterner tests in the Premier League and Europe will punish these lapses.
The Blues cannot realise their ambitions without stability in goal, and right now that department is a liability.
Until the club takes decisive action to secure a top-class shot-stopper, the Blues will remain vulnerable no matter how much talent they boast in other areas of the pitch.
What should have been a routine cup tie has instead laid bare the cracks that could derail their season.
