The old adage in football is that it’s good to get your business done early. We wouldn’t disagree with that.
Chelsea have done a great job of getting their most important players in at the start of the summer. Liam Delap and Joao Pedro even got to play at the Club World Cup with their new teammates. The likes of Jamie Gittens and Jorrel Hato will get a full preseason too.
While early business is good for the players, leaving things late can also snag you a good deal. That seems to be just what the Blues are doing with Alejandro Garnacho. They know that Manchester United want to sell, and that the player wants to leave. And the longer they wait, the more desperate the situation gets.
Chelsea are in an interesting position here – they don’t need Garnacho, especially once Xavi Simons is signed. However they they that they can get a really good deal on him, either to resell in the future or just to get a good player in at a bargain price.
CaughtOffside’s exclusive piece today claims that the Blues have done “a lot of work” on the winger’s transfer, getting things into place so they can swoop towards the deadline. United’s previous demands of £70m already look hopeful, given how little interest there’s been.
So it looks like Chelsea fans will have a lot to look forward to in the final days of the window, despite the fact that so much of their business was done early. There’s the likes of Simons and Garnacho who still need to sign, and a host of squad players we’re looking to sell.
As ever, expect a busy deadline at Stamford Bridge.
