Chelsea are weighing up a move for Bayern Munich centre-back Kim Min-Jae, according to Florian Plettenberg.
The Blues have no plans of hitting the brakes on their ridiculous spending spree, but there’s a feeling that it could be more purpose-driven this summer.
Chelsea are looking to strengthen a number of positions. A defender is high on the list of priorities, but the club are also in the market for a left winger and a striker.
Chelsea have narrowed their search for a defender. At the moment, they’re prioritising a deal for Bournemouth gem Dean Huijsen. But Plettenberg reckons they also have Min-Jae on their radar.
The South Korean was considered untouchable at Bayern, but the soon-to-be Bundesliga champions have shifted their stance.
If they receive a lucrative offer, they won’t close the door on Min-Jae’s potential exit.
Bayern may be open to selling Min-Jae, but he’s not heading to Chelsea. Links to the Blues could be agent-driven or just sheer speculation to drive the player’s market value.
Chelsea’s policy forbids them from signing players on the other side of 25. So far, Tosin Adarabioyo has been the outlier, but they didn’t pay a dime in transfer fees to lure him to Stamford Bridge.
There have been reports that Chelsea may be looking to add some experience to their squad, but Min-Jae’s wages also rule out a move.
The 28-year-old is currently taking home around €230,000 per week at Bayern and will likely demand significantly more from his next employers.
Chelsea are more focused on winning the race for Huijsen. The Spain international is regarded as one of the best centre-backs of his generation and is wanted by half the clubs in Europe.
They’re hoping to finalise a deal before the Club World Cup, but that will be easier said than done.
Huijsen hasn’t decided on his next destination, but Chelsea can envision him as a long-term partner for Levi Colwill at the heart of their defence.
