“Chelsea have to look at themselves” – BBC pundit blames players for damaging home draw

Former Premier League centre back Curtis Davies was on punditry duties for BBC 5 Live today covering Chelsea’s game against Ipswich, and it was really interesting to hear what he made of the game.

The Blues dominated the opening 20 minutes, then conceded two sloppy goals. The rest of the game was spent fighting to recover, and while the Blues did eventually make it to level terms, they couldn’t win it, and ended up with one point in a game where they desperately needed 3.

Fans were brutally disappointed, and quite rightly so. Davies had his say on the game:

“I think for both it’s a really interesting way to look at it, you can say Chelsea showed character to come back but should they have ever been 2-0 down? No.

“Ipswich defended valiantly, tried to hold onto the game, couldn’t quite do it and allowed Chelsea to have the momentum but that’s understandable when you’re playing against a side as good as Chelsea. I think Ipswich deserved the point in the end, Alex Palmer’s performance was brilliant. Chelsea have to look at themselves. The dominance they had, they should’ve made it count but ended up forcing things.”

We were all hoping for Cole Palmer to save the day and get Chelsea a late winner, but instead, as Davies points out, it was his namesake Alex Palmer who was the game changer with a string of late saves which stopped Enzo Maresca’s side stealing a late victory.

But as Davies said, it never should have come to that. We simply shouldn’t be allowing teams like this a sniff in the game, let alone conceding two goals. At the moment, we can have no complaints if we don’t make the Champions League.
