Chelsea head coach Sonia Bompastor says that her side are not happy with their recent results and that they have to put words into actions, starting with this evening’s UEFA Women’s Champions League tie against FC Barcelona at Stamford Bridge.

Back-to-back draws in the Barclays Women’s Super League have resulted in Chelsea surrendering pole position in the league table while The Blues still have work to do to secure an automatic qualification spot in the UEFA Women’s Champions League.

It’s fair to say that some of Chelsea’s performances have real lacked sparkle this season. When speaking in the pre-match press conference, head coach Bompastor did not hide the fact that her side can do better with the right reaction.

“We are not where we want to be,” Bompastor said. “When we started the season, we always wanted to be at the top. The recent results have not been what we wanted.

“We have had really good reviews from those games and I think we know what we have to do to perform better. We have to put words into actions in the next game.”

Reflecting on the areas for improvement, Bompastor again reiterated the requirement for her side to be more clinical with their chances in-front of the opposition goal.

She said “At the highest level, it’s always important to be really efficient and clinical. Right now, we are creating some opportunities, big chances, but we probably need to be more clinical. If you compare our statistics from last season to this season, I think we are underperforming, that’s the reality.

“We have a good mentality and we are working hard every day in training to make sure we change things and improve them.

“We are not happy when we don’t win games, we are not happy when we don’t perform the way that we want to and we are making sure that we focus the energy on that.”

Commenting on latest opponents Barcelona, Bompastor still sees the Spaniards as the major contender in Europe but she wants her own side to rise to the challenge at Stamford Bridge this evening.

She said “Every game against Barcelona is a big competition and I don’t feel any different this season compared to previous seasons. They are a really good team but I also trust the quality in our squad.

“I just want to make sure that we put in our best performance to prove and show how good we are as a team and the fact that we can compete against them.”

Chelsea’s UEFA Women’s Champions League tie against Barcelona kicks-off at 8pm this evening.
