Chelsea could be in more bother this summer after they failed to secure any European football for next season.

The Champions League qualification had already gone, it was not possible to get that on the final day of the season yesterday. But they could have secured Europa League qualification as an alternative. They couldn’t even manage that though, losing 2-1 to Sunderland yesterday and allowing them to leapfrog Chelsea in the table. All Chelsea needed was a draw.

Chelsea have now finished 10th in the Premier League for this season, and it will come as no surprise to start hearing about discontent from the players and certain players wanting out.

Enzo Fernandez has been one of Chelsea’s better performers this season, but I can’t see him staying at Chelsea now this summer. We do not match his ambitions right now, one of which is to continue playing in the UCL.

Journalist Ben Jacobs wrote on X last night:

“Enzo Fernandez made a gesture to Chelsea fans at full-time following the defeat to Sunderland that could be interpreted as a goodbye.

“Fernandez would welcome a bid from Real Madrid, while some informal and formative talks have taken place with Manchester City.

“He wants to play #UCL, with Chelsea’s poor season leaving them in a weaker position to persuade Fernandez to sign a new deal.

“However, Chelsea won’t consider a sale this summer for a book loss.”

Interim boss Calum McFarlane keeps telling us the Chelsea players are trying their hardest – we’re not seeing the evidence of that – because it’s a load of nonsense.
